With 20 g capacity, a large optical range, and a protection shield to avoid the influence of body heat,

this successful balance was produced for 30 years. The M5 was the first microbalance to utilize the

substitution principle. The large optical range enabled differential weighing operations to be carried out

without needing to use the balance’s internal weight system. Hence, one of the largest sources of error,

namely the calibration error of the small weights, was completely eliminated.
